Why Yoga. What does it have to offer?

By Kris Gosnell

Yoga, with its roots in India, is a practice to unite body, breath, mind, and spirit. People come ‘to the mat’ for many reasons including: increased flexibility, stress reduction/relief, general fitness/conditioning, overall improvement of health, strength, mental health (Yoga Alliance & Yoga Journal, 2016).

I guide my students in their unique experiences of yoga. Meeting them where they are and letting the experience unfold as they travel on their journey where they may learn a little about themselves - body, breath, and spirit.

Guiding my practice and teaching is the knowledge and wisdom of the teachers I have been privileged to learn from. Compassion is at the core of my training and I encourage my students to explore their yoga practice with “compassionate self-observation without judgment” (Swami Kripalu).

I believe yoga is accessible to all and we utilize modifications, breath, and sensation to create space so we can explore our bodies in movement. I believe transformation happens when we can take the lessons we learn on-the-mat and incorporate them into our off-the-mat world.
